Halfway around the world, it’s easy to forget the historical relationship between China and Taiwan. Taiwan WAS part of China, until Mao’s revolution.
The rightful government of China fled to Taiwan, and since Communist China’s military might wasn’t enough to overpower The Republic of China in Taiwan, there has been an uneasy peace between the two.
The CCP has never relinquished dreams of someday swallowing up that one upstart region their revolution has failed to conquer.
For the West to fully appreciate Xi’s public statements about ‘reunifying’ China, we might imagine Little Rocket Man standing up and declaring himself the rightful ruler of a ‘unified’ Korea. The Koreans on the Southern half of the peninsula are every bit as Korean as he is, but North Korean Communist ideology has never conquered the South. He runs a very different country under very different rules and most South Koreans have no interest in serving a dictator that imagines himself to be a god.
So also with Taiwan. Surely they will have watched with horror how Communist China tore up the treaties they had with Hong Kong about a gradual reintegration to China of a thriving British port city. The CCP crushed the semi-autonomous elected local government. While the West was distracted by COVID, Xi turned Hong Kong into a client state and has prosecuted protesters wanting nothing more sinister than democracy.
The NBA, who aided and abetted Chinese propaganda about Hong Kong in the West, had nary a word to say about Hong Kong losing even the patina of self-government. I don’t recall John Cena — who clearly has ZERO self-respect — having anything to say about the fall of Hong Kong either. Nor will he have anything negative to say about China’s latest saber-rattling.
China’s “reunification” with Taiwan is inevitable, President Xi Jinping said in his New Year’s address on Sunday, striking a stronger tone than he did last year with less than two weeks to go before the Chinese-claimed island elects a new leader.
The Jan. 13 presidential and parliamentary elections are happening at a time of fraught relations between Beijing and Taipei. China has been ramping up military pressure to assert its sovereignty claims over democratically governed Taiwan.
China considers Taiwan to be its “sacred territory” and has never renounced the use of force to bring it under Chinese control, though Xi made no mention of military threats in his speech carried on state television.
“The reunification of the motherland is a historical inevitability,” Xi said, though the official English translation of his remarks published by the Xinhua news agency used a more simple phrase: “China will surely be reunified”.
“Compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait should be bound by a common sense of purpose and share in the glory of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation,” he added. The official English translation wrote “all Chinese” rather than “compatriots”.
Last year, Xi said only that people on either side of the strait are “members of one and the same family” and that he hoped people on both sides will work together to “jointly foster lasting prosperity of the Chinese nation”.
China has taken particular exception to current Vice President Lai Ching-te, the presidential candidate for Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Party (DPP) and leading in opinion polls by varying margins, saying he is a dangerous separatist.
Responding late on Saturday to Lai’s comments at a live televised presidential debate earlier in the day, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said Lai had “exposed his true face as a stubborn ‘worker for Taiwan independence’ and destroyer of peace across the Taiwan Strait”. — Reuters
Sam Adams might have seen something very different than Xi does in the face of such a man as Lai. He might recognize a kindred spirit… a ‘Son of Liberty’, you might even say.
